Two women walking the 'Long Distance' by-ways of the UK
Lydia, Rebecca and Tally have taken their first practice walk – OK it was only 5 miles, but we all need to start somewhere. See how it went here.

Rebecca has managed to clock up 30km (approximately 18 miles) over the last 2 weekends. She is very happy with her new boots and finds them very comfortable, even in the hot weather. She can recommend them highly.
On Sunday Rebecca managed to get a good deal on a new pair of walking boots. Millets had been running a ‘special’ – 20% off all footwear. She ended up with a pair of Karrimor Penrith L eVent – Nubuck size 6. Rebecca now has 28 days to wear the boots around the house to make sure they are a good and comfortable fit. If not then they can go back and be changed. If they are, then the real breaking in begins.
Rebecca has a 30 minute walk to and from work at the start and end of the working day and also takes guided walks through the medieval ‘Old City’ of her home town at weekends so there is plenty of opportunity to put a good few miles on the boots before the big walk in the summer.

So a week or so down the road, it might be a good idea to join a walking organisation. This would help get the muscles accustomed to walking – although Rebecca does a load of that already! – but also hopefully learn some tips and wrinkles to help with potential problems and/or difficulties while we tramp the path.
These organisations also set challenges – up to 26 miles in 10 hours or so, or over weekends, so there will be plenty to keep us both occupied and, we could both get really fit as well. Oh, so could Tally, our four-legged companion. I really think she needs to work on her stamina.
So we will be looking at The Long Distance Walkers Association http://www.ldwa.org.uk/index.php with a view to joining, soon.
Call us mad if you like, but we want to walk the Kennet and Avon Canal during the summer of 2010. Then talked a bit more and thought that we could do this twice a year (at least), in the long holidays. So we now have an ambition to walk many of the by-ways of the UK and the ‘long distance’ paths as well.
It will be interesting to see how many miles (or kilometers) we walk over the year(s), how many wonderful people we bump into, how many great stories we hear.
So keep coming back to find out about the good times (and the bad), the arrangements we have to make (especially if we have to accommodate a dog as well), the tales and photos, the ups and down.
